Bill Self Sr. was the father of Kansas basketball coach Bill Self and his first basketball mentor who died on Friday, January 2022.
Throughout his life, Self Sr. was known as a coach and instructor.
Self Sr. attended Self’s Hall of Fame ceremony in 2017, as well as other Kansas games throughout the preceding 19 seasons.
In 2013, Self Sr. inducted his son into the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame.
He is perhaps most remembered among Kansas fans for the statement that accompanied his son throughout his playing and coaching careers.
In addition to winning an Oklahoma state title with the Morris High girls’ basketball team in 1966, Self Sr. worked for the Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association from 1972 to 1999.
