Dr. Matthew Hess, MD – Birmingham, AL

I recently completed my orthopedic surgery residency training at UAB where I also was selected to serve as a leader as one of the two administrative chief residents in my final year. After further years of fellowship training, I plan on an academic career primarily focused in orthopedic oncology as well as total joint arthroplasty and adult and pediatric orthopedic trauma. I will train at the University of Chicago, Northwestern University, and Rush in August 2023- August 2024 as part of the University of Chicago combined Musculoskeletal Oncology Fellowship.

I am dedicated to both mentorship and education at all levels of training. I have a strong interest in learning how best to educate in health care and in the training of surgeons. I enjoy organizational efforts and the development of efficient protocols to improve the delivery of patient care. My research currently focuses on the use of blood flow restriction therapy in patients >65yo recovering from hip fracture surgery as well as on the use of tranexamic acid in orthopedic oncologic surgeries. Previously I helped lead the first longitudinal study of injuries in ultimate frisbee athletes and have completed various other studies in the field of orthopedic surgery.
