Pastor, musician, singer, songwriter, and record producer Barnett Jordan was born in the United States on December 3, 1968. Jordan, who is best known for his 1995 single “This Is How We Do It,” was up until his departure from Def Jam in 2003 the main male solo artist on the Def Soul brand.
Montell Jordan parents: Elijah Jordan, Deloris Jordan
Elijah Jordan, Jordan’s father, and Deloris Jordan, his mother, reared Jordan in South Central Los Angeles, where he was born. His mother worked for a microfilm firm, while his father was a bookkeeper. Later, Jordan would credit his upbringing in a two-parent home for the unusually optimistic (for genres influenced by hip-hop) aspects of his lyrics.
The 1995 No. 1 success “This Is How We Do It,” which featured a sample of Slick Rick’s earlier Def Jam hit “Children’s Story,” was Jordan’s first record. The song is a “reflection of what street life was for a youngster who grew up in the neighborhood,” according to talks with Jordan. The song peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and held that position for seven weeks straight. Jordan’s debut album achieved platinum status after selling more than a million copies as a result of the single’s great success.
