His paternal grandparents were natives of Poland, Lithuania, Russia, and Budapest. His mother Polly was born in London’s East End, while his father Franz was born in Vienna.
With his older brother Anthony and younger brother Peter, he spent two years at Hordle House Preparatory School. However, in 1955, when his father’s partnership was stolen and the family faced severe financial hardship, he and Peter were enrolled in a primary school in Ladbroke Grove, a then-run-down area of London.
